Only residents and military personnel visit the beach, which is hardly crowded. The ocean floor is sandy and has a depth of around 5-7 feet for about 100 yards from shore, so you can nearly always stand up or bob about.
This also means that, barring the odd swell, this beach receives a consistent 2-4′ all year.
Intermediate Spots, many of the beaches on the island’s north and north-west sides are suitable intermediate places, as long as you keep seasonal swells in mind (north is big in the winter, south is big in the summer).
Chun’s Reef is a great place, albeit it can be slightly stony at low tide. Nonetheless, it’s a wonderful site due to a little outlet that makes paddling out simple.
